Frequently Asked Questions

What is your name?

How do you spell that?

V as in Vixen, A as in Animorphs, N as in Nefarious

What are you?

A girl.

Seriously what are you?

Seriously, a human girl.

But where are you from?

Westminster, California.

But where are your parents from?

If you’re wondering what nationality I am, it’s Vietnamese with some Japanese in me somewhere.

What fabric do you usually work with?

I tend to work with thin cotton. I used to shy away from knits due to their super un-awesomeness, they’re difficult to work with especially if you’re a beginner, and the fact that they tend to shrink more when you wash them. Some are just too pretty to pass up though, and clothes made with knit fabrics are very comfortable, so I’m starting to work more with that.

However, I especially hate working with chiffon. If you’ve ever worked with chiffon, you will understand why. Some silky lace are also evil. I’m trying to get over my fear of these fabrics and work more with them, because there are some dresses I’m dying to make.

What fabric did you use in your Totoro hoodie video?

Fleece. Someone complained that their hoodie didn’t fit right because fleece is not stretchy. In the video, I used a shirt as a guide to cut my fabric, but I was very liberal when cutting since I knew the shirt fit perfectly with some stretch.

I want to make a hoodie but I don’t want to use fleece. Is there a better fabric?

Yes, you should check out sweatshirt fabric. It’s a knit with fluffiness built into one side, sort of like what commercial hoodies are made of. Joann Arts and Crafts will have it, as will most online fabric stores.

Why don’t you use patterns to make your clothes?

The reason I make my own clothes to begin with is that I like to customize fit, fabric, color, etc. I just don’t see a point in using a pattern, which arguably takes away the customization and flexibility of creating your own clothes. It takes much longer to assemble a pattern (well, for me anyway) than it does to just grab something I know fits me perfectly and use that as a guide anyway.

Plus, most patterns are made for, like, white people. And I’m a petite Asian with weird body proportions that don’t meet American sizing standards. Which is why I make my own clothes. Please don’t judge me.

Where have you been?

I used to make more videos back in college, but then I graduated, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, moved back to California, and have been submitted to the torture better known as becoming an adult.

In other words, I’ve been busy. But I’m going to try to make more videos now! Yaaaaaaaarrrrssshhhhhhhhh?!!!

What breed are your dogs?

Pollo is a Chihuahua mix that came out in the dog hoodie video.

Lucas is a Pomeranian Terrier that has made various cameos.

They’re both rescue dogs with weird psychological problems, but the only important thing is that they love us and we love them.

How long have you been sewing, knitting, or crocheting?

I’ve been crocheting since my sister taught me at around 11 years old, but knitting and sewing, I started more recently in the last 10 years.
